Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is a common autoimmune disorder in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. In the majority of cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter.

Sometimes, it can lead to the complete loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia totalis) or, in extreme cases, the entire body (alopecia universalis). The condition can affect anyone regardless of age and gender, though most cases occur before the age of 30.

Often, it results in a few bald spots on the scalp, each about the size of a coin. The disease may cause psychological stress. People are generally otherwise healthy. In a few cases, all the hair on the scalp is lost (alopecia totalis), or all body hair is lost (alopecia universalis), and loss can be permanent.
